Value Engineering (also known as value management or value analysis) is a function oriented, systematic, facilitated team approach to improve value in a product, process, system, or service. Often, this is focused on cost reduction, however, it is also a powerful tool for developing/enhancing products/processes, systems, designs, or even organizations. Other areas that benefit such as customer perceived quality and performance are also stressed. Payback from using Value Engineering can be in the range of 10:1, or greater, when properly applied. Value Engineering techniques can be applied to any product, process, procedure, system or service in any kind of business or economic sector including health care, environmental, government, architectural and construction, industrial and service.
Best results are achieved when the process is facilitated by a Certified Value Specialist, or CVS, who is certified and accepted by the Society of American Value Engineers (SAVE) as meeting their stringent training and experience requirements in value engineering. Value Engineering can also help your organization with the following: Improve Product Development; Develop Design Requirements and Analyze Functional Requirements; Reduce Product Cost and Risk; Develop winning proposals; Increase Market Share; Solve difficult, perplexing problems; Capitalize on teamwork and employee involvement; Improve Quality and Productivity; Reduce overhead and G&A costs; Find hidden opportunities for improvement; Optimize Company Resources; or Solve "root cause" problems.
The Value Engineering process uses a professionally applied, function oriented , systematic, interdisciplinary team approach to design, analyze and improve value in any product, process, system, facility or service. This powerful methodology for solving problems and/or reducing costs while improving performance and quality is known as Value Engineering. The primary focus of VE is to achieve improvements through a function oriented, systematic approach that focuses on how to improve the performance, and eliminate unnecessary, or high cost functions while maintaining, or improving product quality and reliability. This approach achieves effective results that reduces cost, or avoids unnecessary cost altogether while improving the performance and quality of products, processes, services or facilities. The end result is a well developed action plan to improve competitiveness, or help make an important project a success. As a result, Value Engineering is regarded as one of the most powerful problem solving tools for improving quality, value, and reliability in products, processes and services.
