THE VOGUES

Greatest Hits

Total time - 51:27

1. You're The One (2:22) - The Vogues' first hit is also my favorite by them. The tempo is somewhat faster than moderate. The girl to whom the narrator sings is the girl he wants to kiss, the one he dreams of, and of course the one he loves. He asks her never to leave him, for his love for her grows every day.

2. 5 O'Clock World (2:06) - This moderate-tempoed song depicts the difficulties the narrator faces every day when going to work; to emphasize what a drag work is, sound effects of "hey" fill most of the song. But on the bright side, when the clock strikes 5 PM, the narrator can go home to the arms of his girlfriend. This song was used as the theme song during the second season of ABC's "The Drew Carey Show."

3. Magic Town (3:11) - This moderately slow song illustrates how false big dreams usually are. The narrator was led to believe that a certain city had golden streets, opportunities for sudden wealth, and magic. But now that he's in that city, he instead finds gray sidewalks and goes broke. He wonders where the supposed magic is; if and when he finds it, he'll summon his girlfriend to the city.

4. The Land Of Milk And Honey (2:45) - The narrator of this moderately fast song used to "dodge anything that looked at all like work" and smoke cigarettes at street corners. In the second verse he says he takes on gradually increasing amounts of trouble. But from his plea to be taken to the place named in the title, and from the tired-sounding "cha's" in the background, I get the impression he hasn't completely shed his bum's attitude. Just before the third verse, the key changes from D to E.

5. True Lovers (2:51) - This moderate-tempoed song sounds similar to a Barbara Lewis tune I sometimes hear on the radio, because of the backing vocals "Sh-bop-sh-bop." The narrator's best friend tells him that the narrator's girlfriend has found a new love. At first the narrator dismisses that statement as false, believing himself and her to be a faithful couple. But soon reality sets in--the girl has indeed left the narrator for his best friend.

6. Just The Way You Are (2:16) - This moderately fast song features horns, which are common from now on. The narrator loves his girlfriend not because of her hair or clothes, but because of her personality; her personality is what the title refers to.

7. Please Mr. Sun (2:19) - The tempo is moderate. I like how the narrator personifies various parts of nature such as the sun, the wind, a robin, and a raindrop. He wants to tell a certain girl that he loves her. He asks the sun to talk to her, the wind to whisper to her, the robin to sing to her, and the raindrop to kiss her for him.

8. Lovers Of The World Unite (2:28) - This song, somewhat faster than moderate, features a tambourine. The narrator sees a lot of strife, greed, and apathy in the world; he believes the only solution is love. So he asks lovers throughout the world to gather together: "It seems that just the young know how / So I ask you, listen now."

9. Just What I've Been Looking For (2:42) - The tempo is slightly faster than moderate. The narrator has been looking for a girl who will kiss him, cheer him up when he's down, and love him forever. And the girl to whom he's singing answers that description very well.

10. Turn Around, Look At Me (2:44) - This song and the next 3 are all slow and in 12/8 time. The narrator of this song walks behind the girl, asking her to turn and see him. Not only does he need her love, she also needs his guidance through life's ups and downs.

11. My Special Angel (2:58) - The narrator considers his girlfriend to be his "special angel"; her smile brings him sunshine, her tears bring him rain, and she watches over him so he can cope with the bad times that befall him. Near the end, the key rises a step. Sometimes I also hear on the radio the original version by Bobby Helms.

12. Till (2:19) - The Angels sang the original version of this slow, 12/8 song.

13. Woman Helping Man (3:10) - Instruments include orchestral strings and a flute. The narrator's idea of love is mutual understanding between man and woman. He believes God planned for woman to help man and for man to protect woman.

14. No, Not Much (3:22) - The tempo is moderately slow. The narrator sounds like a cold fish to me, for he doesn't appreciate the girl's hugs and kisses. Perhaps he'd be happier without love than with it.

15. Earth Angel (2:34) - Here's another slow, 12/8 song whose narrator believes that the girl he's singing to is an angel on Earth. Only this time, he doesn't have the girl's love, but rather wishes he could. A 50s group named the Penguins had sung the hit version of this song.

16. Moments To Remember (3:46) - Those are what the narrator and his girlfriend will have throughout the year. This slow song has an even slower, 23-second intro. Instruments include orchestral strings, bells, and a flute.

17. Green Fields (3:18) - Here's yet another song with a slow, 12/8 tempo. The narrator looks back on the green fields and river valleys he and the girl used to walk through, plus the "blue skies with white clouds" they walked under, when they were together. Now that they're apart, the green fields are gone, rivers no longer flow through the valleys, and the skies have turned gray.

18. Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye (3:31) - This slow song starts and ends with soft piano rolls. According to the narrator, having sorrow in one's eyes and comparing dying love to the inevitable changes of nature is the wrong way to end a romantic relationship. However, this song itself is the perfect way to end this album.
