SAM AND DAVE

This duo consisted of Sam Moore and Dave Prater. Dave died in an auto accident in 1988, but Sam continues to perform. He rarely goes on the Oldies circuit, but he has also recorded with Don Henley, Bruce Springsteen and Conway Twitty (just before Conway's death in 1993). He now has a show at Boombox Radio.

The Best of Sam and Dave

Total time - 56:26

1. A Place Nobody Can Find (2:53) - The tempo is slightly slower than moderate. Instruments include a piano and horns, both of which are commonly heard throughout this disc. On the night in which the song is set, the narrator plans to take his girlfriend to a remote place and "talk sweet talk" to her. Actually, if no one could find that place, even he couldn't find it; so it would actually be a place that only he and his girlfriend can find.

2. Good Night Baby (2:43) - This slow, 12/8 song features chimes. As the narrator says good night to his girlfriend, he reminds her to keep thinking of him; if she wakes up feeling blue, she may call him any time.

3. I Take What I Want (2:28) - The narrator of this fast song has watched the girl walk by many times. He takes what he wants, and he wants her, so he's gonna take her and declare her his girlfriend.

4. Sweet Home (2:35) - The tempo is moderately slow and in 12/8 time. Ever since the narrator invited the girl into his house and befriended her, she has built a home in his heart. Now that their friendship has turned into romance, she lives in the same "sweet home" as he does.

5. You Don't Know Like I Know (2:35) - This song, slightly faster than moderate, features a tambourine. The first several measures remind me of Little Anthony and the Imperials' "Shimmy Shimmy Koko Bop." No one knows like the narrator does, how well his girlfriend treats him. "In the mornin' she's my water / In the evenin' she's my cup of tea," he says of her.

6. Hold On, I'm Comin' (2:30) - My favorite S&D song has a moderate tempo. The narrator tells his girlfriend not to be sad; just when she's about to drown in her troubles, he will come to her rescue as fast as he can. This is one of only two S&D songs I ever hear on the radio.

7. Said I Wasn't Gonna Tell Nobody (2:30) - The tempo is slightly faster than moderate. The guys' voices and the drums are in the right speaker; the horns, guitar, and organ play in the left channel. The narrator said he wouldn't tell anyone how much he loves his girlfriend, but as their love grows stronger, so does his urge to tell the world.

8. You Got Me Hummin' (2:52) - The tempo is moderate. Instruments include an organ. The narrator's girlfriend creates a wind that blows through him, thoughts of her keep him up at night, and of course, she's got him hummin'!

9. When Something Is Wrong With My Baby (Something Is Wrong With Me) (3:15) - The tempo is slow and in 12/8 time; the drums play on every second and fourth quarter beat. Whenever the narrator's girlfriend is unhappy, he feels that he has failed in his duty to keep her satisfied.

10. A Small Portion Of Your Love (2:35) - The opening piano solo may indicate a slow, 12/8 tempo, but actually the tempo is moderate and in 4/4 time. Just a little of the girl's love is all the narrator needs to wind up like a clock, to feel like going to work, and otherwise to feel good about himself.

11. Soothe Me (2:30) - The tempo is moderate. For the first 14 seconds, the guys' voices and the drums are subdued. This song was written and previously sung by Sam Cooke.

12. Soul Man (this version 2:36; 1980s stereo version 2:36) - The duo's other big hit has a moderate tempo. Instruments include a tambourine. The theme here is a bit similar to that in "Hold On"; the narrator tells the girl not to worry, for he will make her feel good with all the soul in him.

13. May I Baby (2:37) - This moderately slow song features chimes. The narrator asks the girl if he may walk her home and become her boyfriend.

14. I Thank You (2:52) - The tempo is slightly faster than moderate. To start the song off, Sam shouts, "I want everybody to get up off your seats! And get your arms together and your hands together and give me some of that old soul!" The narrator's girlfriend loved him, held him, kissed him, etc., more than she had to, but by doing so she made him feel so good that he's thankful to have her love.

15. Wrap It Up (2:29) - The tempo is moderate. The narrator has fallen in love with the girl. He asks her to put her love in a box, wrap it, and give it to him; in return, he'll treat her like a queen and hand her sweet stuff from his candy jar.

16. Still Is The Night (2:40) - This very slow, 12/8 song features orchestral string instruments. The night has been still, and the narrator hears not one sound in his house, ever since his girlfriend left him. The lines "Bring it on home / Bring your sweet love home to me" remind me of Sam Cooke's "Bring It On Home To Me."

17. You Don't Know What You Mean To Me (2:39) - The drums and the piano roll for the first 20 seconds; the rest of the song has a moderate swing tempo. The narrator tells the girl not to worry, for he'll come home to her soon. Once he arrives, he'll do everything he can to prove to her how much she means to him.

18. This Is Your World (2:24) - The tempo is moderately slow. The narrator lives in his girlfriend's world. She controls his soul. All joy he feels comes from her; all pain he suffers comes from her also.

19. Can't You Find Another Way (Of Doing It) (2:24) - The tempo is slightly faster than moderate. The narrator wishes that his girlfriend could find another way of announcing that she is leaving him for another man. He finds that doing his best to make her happy "is like fighting an army with [his] bare hands."

20. Soul Sister, Brown Sugar (2:29) - Of the songs I hadn't heard prior to buying this disc, I like this moderate-tempoed song best. The first 2 seconds consist of studio chatter. The narrator hopes to win the heart of a girl who is sweeter than honey or icing on a cake.

21. Come On In (2:49) - The tempo is slightly slower than moderate. Since the weather is getting cold and the narrator wants a romantic moment with his girlfriend, he urges her to come inside first, then to let HIM "come on in."
