THE NITTY GRITTY DIRT BAND

More Great Dirt: The Best of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Volume 2

Total time - 33:57

1. Cadillac Ranch (3:40) - This moderately fast song was written by Bruce Springsteen. The narrator likes to drive a long black Cadillac and cruise highways "like a big ol' dinosaur." Vocals stop at 2:29; guitars and a harmonica play for over a minute until fadeout.

2. I've Been Lookin' (3:20) - The tempo is fast. Hands clap on every second and fourth beat for the first 44 seconds; more drums play after that. The narrator seeks not a woman who fears commitment, but "a love to stand the test of time," a woman who will sleep beside him every night and whom he can love for eternity. The handclaps return at 2:36 and continue till fadeout.

3. Oh What A Love (3:07) - This song has a similar speed to the previous one. At the beginning I hear a lead guitar in the right speaker, another guitar in the left speaker. The narrator is glad to have a love that can quell his pain and heal his wounds; a light that can brighten his life and stop the rain; and a song that can quell his fears and, like the light, stop the rain. Starting at 2:38 is nearly half a minute of guitar licks and "ooo's."

4. Workin' Man (Nowhere To Go) (3:50) - This song, somewhat faster than moderate, opens with a harmonica. The narrator lost his job when the stock market crashed; as a result, he lost his home to foreclosure. He can't get a new job, so he has no choice but to sit in a park at night.

5. I Love Only You (3:29) - This song, somewhat faster than moderate, is one of the two songs for which I bought this disc. I like the guitar licks in the middle and fading instrumentals. A harmonica is also featured here. The narrator enjoys things like drinking beer, socializing with his buddies, sleeping in on weekends, yard work, but the only woman he loves is the one to whom he sings. He even muses about being a star, shining on her and letting other people sing with him about her.

6. Fishin' In The Dark (3:20) - This fast song is my favorite NGDB song, the other song I bought this disc for. It's nice to be able to play this one over and over without lifting a finger. Anyway, one night in late spring, the narrator plans to take his girlfriend to the river to fish. Even if the fish don't bite, they'll still make love and cool themselves off with a dip in the river.

7. Baby's Got A Hold On Me (3:04) - This song, slightly faster than the previous one, opens with a 4-second drum solo. The narrator has everything he needs in a girlfriend with blue eyes, blond hair to mid-back, and "the keys to her daddy's Cadillac." In that car they love to spend 3-day weekends cruising.

8. Face On The Cutting Room Floor (3:09) - This song has the same pace as the previous one. The title refers to an aspiring actress whose career has failed.

9. Down That Road Tonight (3:07) - This song, somewhat faster than moderate, features a harmonica. The narrator and his sweetheart have lately lost touch with each other by focusing too much on work and worldly worries. He has an idea for renewing their relationship: they should drive out of town on a moonlit Saturday night.

10. Home Again In My Heart (3:31) - The tempo is moderate. The featured instrument is a banjo. The narrator's father spent 37 years working on a railroad. Now the narrator, feeling economically stifled in his small hometown, leaves for a bigger city. Though he never goes back physically, he does in his heart every once in a while.
