CHUBBY CHECKER

Born Ernest Evans, Chubby Checker got his stage name from being a fan of Fats Domino.

The Best of Chubby Checker

Total time - 26:01
All recordings are 1970s and '80s stereo remakes. If you want the original recordings, don't buy this disc. I've found WAVs of some of the songs on this page, which also includes WAVs of many other artists; you'll have to scroll down to find Chubby's hits.

1. The Twist (2:36) - This song is fast, as are most of the songs on this disc. It is also my favorite of Chubby's tunes. The narrator tells his girlfriend that his mom is gone and his dad's asleep. So they're gonna twist "till [they] tear the house down," hey? If they make that much racket, they'll wake his dad up & then be in big trouble! He also mentions that his younger sister is a very skilled twister. This is one of three Chubby songs I hear on the radio.

2. The Hucklebuck (2:24) - Here Chubby teaches us how to do another dance; the way to do it is to "wiggle like a snake, walk like a duck." But I think you could twist to this one also, if it suits you better; it suits me better.

3. Pony Time (2:24) - This time, the dance is the pony. I like the "boogedy-booggedy-shoo" backup vocals. Chubby tells us to turn left when he says "gee," then right when he says "haw."

4. The Fly (2:19) - This song opens with some instrument giving a sound effect to match the buzzing of a fly (the insect). As with other dances, those who really try can do it. The narrator asks the girl to "fly away" with him--to dance as far into the air as possible.

5. Let's Twist Again (2:20) - The sequel to "The Twist" is the second of the three radio hits. It opens with Chubby telling us to clap our hands. In the middle, he asks who's flying in the sky. A bird? No. A plane? No. The twister? Yes! Twist away, everyone!

6. Limbo Rock (2:24) - A few times during this song, Chubby laughs heartily then, over a drum solo, asks us how low the limbo bar can be so we can move under it. The last of Chubby's three songs I hear on the radio, this song has the word "limbo" in every line--"limbo moon above," "fall in limbo love," etc. It gives a new twist to an old nursery rhyme--instead of Jack jumping over a candlestick, he's going UNDER a LIMBO stick.

7. Slow Twistin' (uncredited female duet partner; partner on original verison was Dee Dee Sharp) (2:41) - This song has a moderate tempo to ease from the pace of all the previous songs. Although I never heard this song prior to buying this disc, I like it a lot. Chubby's partner sings mostly "mmm yeah" and "come on, come on," almost like a backup singer, but I like her parts a lot. In unison they sing "There's no no twistin' like a-slow slow twistin' with you."

8. Popeye The Hitchhiker (2:29) - The speed goes back up for this song. One percussion sounds almost the quacking of a duck. The writers of this song might have named the title character after Popeye of cartoon fame. The hitchhike in this case would be a dance, but it might have inspired the writing of Marvin Gaye's "Hitch Hike" or vice versa.

9. Hooka Tooka (2:09) - Here's a mellow, moderately slow tune. Chubby sings the chorus alone the first time. The other times the chorus happens, people sing behind him and hands clap on every first and third beat. The narrator's mother-in-law chews tobacco; he tells everyone whose mother does the same to say "Hooka tooka, my soda cracker." My mom doesn't chew tobacco (and for that matter, neither do I), but to each his/her own.

10. Twist It Up (3:46) - Here's a third tune with the word "twist" in the title. This is either a live recording or a pseudo-live where a bunch of Chubby's friends gathered in the studio with him. I believe the latter, from the small amount of applause I hear. This compilations both opens and closes with a "twist" tune; twist away, everyone!
