1. Kind Of A Drag (2:07) - The guys' first hit, a moderately fast tune, features horns and an organ. It is a drag, all right, when a guy gets dumped. Even though his girl no longer loves him, he loves her anyway; the song fades out with repeating of the word "anyway."
2. Lawdy Miss Clawdy (2:06) - The first 3 seconds consist of studio talk indicating that Take 14 was the finished track. The tempo is fast; horns and a harmonica are among the instruments. Clawdy has been untrue to the narrator and apparently wants only his money; the song ends with him declaring the end of their relationship and "Down the road I go."
3. I've Been Wrong Before (1:55) - This song is even faster than the previous one. Instruments include an electric guitar and a tambourine. Apparently, previous suspicions by the narrator of his girlfriend cheating on him proved false, but the latest one is true; he recently saw another guy with her. He promises to give her anything she wants if she'll just stay with him.
4. I'll Go Crazy (2:07) - The tempo is moderate. The horns play in the right speaker while the other instruments play in the left speaker. The narrator will go crazy if his girlfriend leaves him. My favorite line from this song is "You gotta live for yourself, for yourself and nobody else."
5. I Call Your Name (2:11) - This version is moderately fast, faster than the original version by the Beatles.
6. Makin' Up And Breakin' Up (2:11) - This fast song includes an organ and (in the right speaker) a tambourine. Since becoming engaged, the narrator and his fiancee have had a love that's here one day, gone the next, and back the third. To the narrator, "it just ain't fair" that they can't stay together.
7. Don't You Care (2:28) - This song is slightly slower than the previous one. It is the second of the top three Buckinghams songs as far as airplay goes ("Kind Of A Drag" is the first). The narrator wonders why his girlfriend runs around on him and tells him lies, rather than tell him she doesn't love him. They used to have fun times together, but now he suspects that if she ever did love him, she no longer does.
8. Mercy Mercy Mercy (2:47) - This moderately slow song features horns in the right speaker and a piano in the left. The narrator's girlfriend models for Playboy as a bunny, but more important than that, she gives him hugs and kisses when he needs them. During the second verse, as Carl sings phrases like "she walks by" and "I know why," his voice resembles that of Mark Lindsay of Paul Revere and the Raiders.
9. Hey Baby (They're Playing Our Song) (2:48) - For the first 4 seconds, I hear studio chatter and laughing; listen only to the right speaker and it lasts a few seconds more. This moderately fast song is the third Buckinghams song I hear on the radio often, though the previous song and the next one get airplay occasionally. A piano, an organ, and a tambourine play in the left speaker, while drums, handclaps, and horns fill the right. The narrator tells his ex-girlfriend that they should restart their relationship because the radio is now playing their old favorite song, the song they heard when they fell in love in the first place. When I first heard this song on the radio, I thought it was Neil Diamond.
10. Susan (2:55) - A piano opens this moderately fast song. Other instruments include orchestral strings and a tambourine. Seldom do we hear words rhyme with the name Susan, but in this case there are a few, like "losin' " and "confusin' ." Anyway, Susan is leaving the narrator, and it hurts him because he could never love any other woman. From 1:30 to the 2-minute mark is an orchestral frenzy a la the one in the Beatles' "A Day In The Life."
11. Back In Love Again (2:24) - This song is slightly slower than the previous one. This and all subsequent songs, you're sure never to hear on the radio. The narrator, having been hurt by love before, has found a new girlfriend who is true. He looked for a long time and thought he'd never find one, but at last he has.
12. You Misunderstand Me (2:27) - This song, similar in tempo to the previous two, features a tambourine in the left speaker. It doesn't surprise me that the girl misunderstands the narrator; after all, men are from Mars and women are from Venus. He will do anything for her if she'll just hold him close.
13. Where Did You Come From (2:33) - A trumpet opens this moderate-speed song. The girl is so beautiful that the narrator can't believe the sight of her. Wherever she came from, he now hopes to make her his lifelong lover and tell the world, "I fell in love today!"
14. This Is How Much I Love You (2:41) - The tempo is moderate. At 0:24 a tambourine starts playing in the right speaker. Once the chorus starts, horns fill the left speaker. "This is what myself tells me" is one of the funniest phrases I've ever heard, but more than any other guy could love the girl is how much the narrator loves her, and will love her regardless of what others say.
15. It's A Beautiful Day (For Lovin') (2:54) - Believe it or not, there was a group called It's A Beautiful Day. Anyway, this fast song features a piano and orchestral strings. Dawn is breaking, the birds are singing, and all other conditions are suitable for couples to love and dream. The narrator is the dawn that declares the new day so good.
16. Difference Of Opinion (4:00) - The tempo is moderately fast. For the first 3 seconds, a piano plays solo; other instruments enter one at a time: top-hat cymbals, guitar, crash cymbals. Shortly after the 1:30 mark, the tempo decelerates. Here's another Mars-Venus situation. The girl won't make eye contact with the narrator or smile when the sun shines, and he believes she should lighten up, hence the attitude difference.
17. I Got A Feelin' (3:24) - This song's measures count fast. The song opens with the soft playing of a guitar and a harmonica. The narrator's feeling is that he and his girlfriend are about to break up. He can tell because her touch is not as sincere as it used to be.
18. You (previously unreleased) (4:14) - This song has a similar tempo to the previous one. Here, though, the narrator and his girlfriend have a good relationship. They whisper to each other, walk in the rain, and hope to stay together for eternity. They know in their hearts that time united them.
