ATA trapshooting is divided into three disciplines: 16 yard singles, doubles, and handicap trap (up to 27 yards). The games are shot on a standardized field layout. Each field has five numbered shooting positions (or posts), 1 through 5. A full shooting squad consists of 5 competitors.
In singles and handicap, each shooter in turn, beginning with the squad leader who starts on Post 1, attempts single targets. After each shooter completes 5 attempts, the whole squad moves one post to the right, with the shooter on post 5 moving back around to post 1. A round is complete when all shooters have completed 5 attempts at each of the 5 shooting posts.
