Laura Gertrude VanOrden Williams was born on November 9, 1897 in Washington, Utah. Her parents were Peter Edmund VanOrden and Laura Bastian VanOrden .
Gertrude came to Thomas with her family in 1905. She graduated from the district school in 1913. She took a short course at B.Y.C in Logan and a course at Ricks Academy (now known as Ricks College ).
