Iona History/ Iona Today

Mormon Settlement on Sand Creek

Iona was established in 1883. The first log cabin built belonged to Cadwallader Owens and the first Sunday school and church meetings were held in this home. Another log cabin was built on the southeast corner of Owens avenue and Iona north road and was where the first school was held. Thomas Nixon built the first three room frame house in Iona. The center of all the town’s activities was the first church which was built in 1887. School was also held in this building and dances and parties of all kinds.

Stanger Memorial Art Gallery

History of the old rock church, now known as the Stanger Memorial Art Gallery, dates back to the Iona pioneer days. Construction of what is now one of the oldest buildings in Bonneville county, still standing, was begun in the spring of 1887 and completed in 1888. Men of the community cut and
hauled sandstone blocks from the north end of the big hill east of Iona for the construction of a 24 x 40 foot structure which served as both church and school house for the early Iona residents. A new wing, which provided three classrooms was completed in 1894. It was designated as the stake
headquarters for the LDS Church and at that time the stake boundaries extended from Pocatello on the south to Rexburg on the north.
The old rock church was used for church meetings, school and community events until the 1900's. School was held there until 1906, church and community functions until 1917. At one time, it even housed a garage. Later it was remodeled into apartments and used this way for some twenty
years.
In 1968 the idea of trying to obtain the old rock building for the use of the Bonneville Art Association originated. In 1969 the Stanger family donated the property to the City of Iona for the specific use of the Art Association. They were charged with the responsibility of restoring it for purposes of cultural and civic functions and also to help with the beautification of the building and landscaping.
Over the years, the various members of the Bonneville Art Association have used, enjoyed and appreciated this fine old building as well as many other members of Iona and surrounding communities.
