![]() Henry's Lake Area WildlifeHenry's Lake is in what is known as the Yellowstone Corridor. There are open migration routes between Yellowstone National Park and the Centennial Mountains. Despite drastic over harvest of timber in the Island Park area in the '60s and 70's, and road densities in excess of prescribed restoration goals the Henry's Lake area has some of the best habitat outside of Yellowstone. There are roadless areas associated with Wilderness Study Areas in the Targhee Basin, in the Centennial Mountains from Sawtelle Mountain to West Dry Creek, and from Island Park Reservoir to the Big Bend area, through Harriman State Park. Less comon species include wolverine, fisher, lynx, grizzly bear, trumpeter swan, whooping crane, and grayling (in the Madison and Red Rock Creek drainage). The largest desert overwintering elk herd in the nation, found on the Sand Creek winter range, west of Ashton in winter, makes its summer and fall range in much of the Henry's Lake area. Moose, mule deer, and white tailed deer are also abundant around Henry's Lake. Cougar and bighorn sheep are increasingly abundant in the Targhee Basin, Henry's Lake Mountains, and Horn Mountains to the north. The major trails for access to the most wildlife abundant areas around Henry's Lake include the Targhee Trail off of Highway 20 that goes to the Continental Divide through Targhee Basin. The Continental Divide trail is accessible from Raynold's Pass, and Red Rock Pass to the north and west, respectively. e-mail. |
