Why VCR is necessary

Credit reports and scoring generate more consumer complaints to the Federal Trade Commission than the next several catagories combined. Despite this no other consumer organization has chosen to focus specifically on credit reports and their victims. There are literally hundreds of privacy web pages and dozens of privacy lobbying groups in the US, but their resources are scattered over topics ranging from encryption to cable TV access. The more generalized US consumer advocacy organizations find themselves tied up with everything from baby carriers to food product labels. VCR (Victims of Credit Reporting) is an attempt to fill that important niche without relying on the corporate funding that typically drives most US consumer groups.

Statement of Goals

Victims of Credit Reporting is a victims rights advocacy group dedicated to over two hundred and sixty million US citizens whose lives are being disrupted by consumer credit reporting. Although our focus is on US practices, we welcome input and suggestions from all parts of the world. It is our goal to make lawmakers and citizens aware of the social and financial damage caused by credit reporting/scoring. We work to encourage passage of laws that allow Americans the right to limit the exchange of data about their lives, participate in the free market, and resolve consumer disputes by means other than credit report blacklisting. It is our firm belief that consumer credit reporting is a major cause of the social stratification that has plagued the US since the start of large scale computerized credit reporting in the 1970s. We cannot in good faith advocate “self policing” in an industry that has repeatedly betrayed the citizens and the economy. In short, we advocate total elimination of the so-called consumer credit reporting industry.

VCR is not a “not for profit” organization since the current congress has declared that “not-for-profits” may not lobby for civil rights. No such restrictions have been placed on Credit Bureaus, who deduct millions in lobbying costs from their taxes each year.

Who is Involved in VCR

VCR was formed 1993 as one of the first internet oriented privacy rights organizations and has been on the web continuosly since that time. VCR is currently based in Seattle Washington.

VCR has volunteer affiliate members in many cities who monitor media and public records for stories involving credit reporting practices, Future plans include a digital database of legislative and court records related to credit. VCR does not engage in “credit repair” advice, since it is a core belief of VCR that the current system is so corrupt that it offers no protection to any victim under any circumstance.
