Hail from the Chief

by Brian Novak

It's here! Corvette time, I've been waiting for it for months. We started the season off with a bang! The first "Dairy Queen" night was very well attended, and Dairy Queen even gave away a couple of ice cream cakes. This should be a fun get together for the summer. Eastern Idaho Technical College then gave a presentation on their analysis machine by hooking up Kelly and Terry's '86 Pace Car. The fine folks at EITC even found a problem that was easily fixable! Way to go guys!! They were very knowledgeable and friendly and those that attended had a real good time. Next time you see Val Chambers or Frank Stanger, thank them for their time. Finally, we traveled (17 corvettes in all) to the Hill Aerospace Museum and Union Square Museum in Ogden. Talk about lucky, the SR-71 "Blackbird", one of the fastest planes of all times, was parked outside and we got to park near it for some pictures. The staff said that this was a very rare occurrence for the plane to be outside, so we got some amazing photos because we're just plain lucky. (Ask a couple of the monkeys who scaled the hangar to take some pics and give the staff a heart attack, Lynn, Kelly, Tom...)

At the meeting this month, we will need to talk about our stretch of I-15, it really needs to be cleaned. Last year we did not clean because of lack of participation. I know we can rally a crew of 15-20 people on some sunny weekend in early June. It only takes a couple of hours, and if we meet fairly early in the morning, we are done before it gets too hot. Please help out this year so we can keep our road clean.

Also, I have a few names for people willing to be on a "calling tree". It is very important to have one established before summer gets rolling. This is the easiest way to get information out to the club and is a good way for some of the newer members to learn who the members are. Basically, you get a block of names, and when you get called with information on upcoming events, you just call your people. It is very simple, yet helps out greatly. I will be asking for volunteers at this months meeting for that also.

Other than that, it looks like we have a great spring/summer in store for us so lets get out there and have fun!

Don't forget Dairy Queen!!!

We will be meeting at the Dairy Queen on Broadway (BROADWAY, Dale) on the 6th and 20th of May, around 6:30 each night. It was very well attended the last time and should be a good time for all.

May's Meeting

The May meeting will be a Sunday Breakfast/ Brunch at the Relay Station. The Relay Station has great food and has always supported the club. The meeting will be Sunday, May 23rd at 11:00 a.m. Meet at the Old Fred Myers (usual place, not like the last time) at 10:00 a.m. and we'll leave at 10:15 a.m. We'll hook up with the others at the Relay Station.

The members of Corvettes Of Southeast Idaho wish to thank the college , Val Chambers, and Frank Stanger for providing us with a very informative morning. Mr. Chambers and Mr. Stanger came in on their day off to provide a clinic for members of the corvette club. 12 members attended and were very pleased with the presentation.

A corvette was hooked up to the diagnostic machine. This vehicle had a "check engine" light on indicating trouble. Mr. Stanger found the trouble and explained in very clear terms what the trouble was and how he will correct it.

After correction, the corvette ran very well and the owner was happy with the results. Everyone went away feeling the time spent at EITC was very beneficial to them.

We feel that the instructors are very knowledgeable, the equipment available to the student is top rated, and that the college should turn out some competent auto technicians.

On behalf of members of Corvettes Of Southeast Idaho, thanks for a job well done.

Club member Lynn McKinlay has started a glass repair business. So for your corvette or other vehicle's glass needs, give Lynn a call. He has recently got with the local insurance companies for rates.

I understand that June 5th, the INEEL site will be opened to the public for tours. Would there be enough interest of the group to make this a vette tour ? Yours truly would be happy to explain the "many wonders" of the site to the group if you would like to do this. I know many of our members are, or have worked out there and they could also explain what knowledge they have. It could be an interesting day. Let us know at the next meeting or at the Dairy Queen get together.

WILD WEST VETTE FEST 1999

The Next Meeting will be May 19th at 7:00. This will be at Kelly & Terry Armstrong's house. Please try to attend.

------------

Plans are going well, with the registration forms set to go out in the near future. New items for this year is a LIVE band for Saturday Nights entertainment. Our man in the BBQ pits will be back for another great Saturday night dutch-oven dinner. Fun, food, music, Corvettes, and trophies galore will mark this as our 5th corvette show in West Yellowstone.

-------------

IMPORTANT for non-CSEI Members!!

If you made a room reservation at the Grey Wolf Inn for this years Wild West Vette Fest, they may have overcharged you. To get the $85.00/night rate, you need to tell them you are with the corvette show. They thought it was only for Corvette of South-East Idaho members. We think we got this straightened out, but our out-of-town guests might want to call and verify.

TAYLOR CHEVROLET CAR SHOW

The car show at Taylor Chevrolet is Saturday June 26th. There is no registration fee, free food, free prizes and trophies. They have supported our car show for years. Let's turn out for their show and have a good time too.

TAUTPHAUS PARK CAR SHOW

The date is June 6th. If we go over between 9:30 and 10:00 a.m. that will be ok. I will go over early and stake out our turf, the same place as last year. Egon

A fellow bought a new Corvette and was out on an empty turnpike for a nice evening drive. The top was down, the breeze was blowing through his hair, and he decided to open her up. As the needle jumped to 80 mph he suddenly saw a flashing red and blue light behind him. "There ain't no way they can catch a Corvette," he thought to himself and opened her up further.

The needle hit 100, 120 and finally 150 with the lights still behind him.

"What am I doing?" he thought, and pulled over. The cop came up to him, took his license and without a word examined it and the car. "I've had a tough shift," the officer said, "and this is my last stop. I don't feel like more paperwork, so if you can give me an excuse for your driving that I haven't heard before, you can go!"

"Last week, my wife ran off with a highway patrolman," the man said. "And I was afraid you were trying to give her back!"

"Have a nice night," the officer said.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles

by Egon Lamprecht

What a day we had May 1st. 17 cars made the trip to Ogden UT. I worked a deal with the weather man to stop the rain for 24 hours, and halt road construction so we could have a very eventful day.

Feature this for a background for photo session, a SR-71 "blackbird", that is always in the hangar, was outside. With the work of a Fred Carlson and others, we were allowed to park the vettes next to it for a photo session. You will see this ,I hope on Frank's vette web page and in Vette magazine.

After we viewed all the aircraft, we moved on to Union station, to view guns, trains, and automobiles. Oh yes, by now the group was hungry so we had lunch at the Union Grill, good food. The volunteers running the Union station were very friendly and explained the displays. We even had a special parking place out in front.

Both places could be enjoyed again in the future.

Thanks to all those that attended the event. To our new members: welcome, we need you to enrich our club.

Now I need to address something I really don't want to, but feel I must. At least 1/3 of those on the trip , mostly those back in the pack, expressed to me that they felt "really uncomfortable" trying to keep up with the pack because of high speeds. My primary concern as your events coordinator is the safety of the members on club sponsored trips. Secondly, I don't want any member staying home from an event because they feel we travel at a speed they do not wish to travel. Therefore I feel I must request that in future , on club sponsored trips, we follow as close as reasonable possible the posted speed limits. Thank you for your cooperation in the future. We have a great summer ahead. Jackpot, here we come !The following cars are listed for Carlson Corvette & Classics. Fred Carlson, 522-0746
