Did You Know

Let’s talk tires this time!
On one of my KID Saturday car talk shows, we were discussing tires. It was getting a little boring, so I turned the show over to my partner, went outside with a tire gauge, and tested tires on eight parked cars in the parking lot.
Here is what I found. All eight had under inflated tires. Pressures ranged from13 to 45 PSI.
Now we get to the subject of this article. Twenty-five million drivers believe that if a tire doesn’t look under inflated, there’s no need to check it.
Did you know that tire pressure goes up or down 1 to 2 pounds for every 10 degrees change in temperature? So think about a change of 30 degrees. Enough said! Also a tire can loose one to three pounds a month just sitting. You have had your Vette in storage all winter, right? You say, “My tires look just fine.” The fact is, tires that look “just fine” can have only half the recommended pressure.
So my recommendation is if you don’t own an accurate tire gauge (don’t depend on those at the gas station), get one, it will pay for itself in tire savings. We all know what Vette tires cost.
I will be looking at your Vettes; if I find a low tire, you will hear about it.

There are two notices from GM concerning Corvettes.
If you have a 1998 through 2001 Corvette, please read this. General Motors has decided that certain 1998-2001 Vettes may exhibit a condition in which the electronic column lock may not function as intended. The condition could result in the failure of the steering column to unlock during initial key-in and start-up. Should the column fail to unlock, the engine will stop running if the vehicle starts to move.
If you have a 1997 through 2003 Corvette, please read this notice that was sent to all Chevrolet Service Managers.
GM Service and Parts Operations is requesting your assistance. We are looking for any 1997-2003 model Corvette that allegedly has experienced steering column lock engagement during vehicle operation. If you have a customer complaint alleging that the steering column lock engaged during vehicle operation, please submit a field product report immediately. See service bulletin 02-00-89-002A for a report instructions. We are interested in knowing about any Corvette that has allegedly had this occur. It is very important that the vehicle not be disturbed once the condition is reported. Do not insert the key into the ignition lock cylinder. The ignition lock cylinder must remain in the “off” position. The vehicle should be transported via flat bed truck to the dealership and an FPR submitted. GM personnel may wish to visit your dealership to inspect the involved vehicle.
If you have any of these problems please call a Chevrolet dealership. If you have any more questions contact me at Taylor Chevrolet in Rexburg at 356-6600.
