The Prez Box
by Ron Bone
If you did only a
part of the activities available during the last month, you were busy. We started by chauffeuring two graduating
D.A.R.E. classes to school; one to Eagle Rock JHS, and one to Clair E. Gale
JHS. We had to double up a bit in the
Corvettes, and thank goodness Beth Campbell brought her Z28 Camaro, but we made
it. The kids, as always, were so much
fun. Thanks to all of you who showed up
with your cars. And a special thanks to
Wayne Campbell for organizing all of it.
Then six of our
Corvettes went to Cruise to the Sky at
They had an awesome
autocross set up at the MSU campus.
While Brian Novak was reminiscing about days past in the nearby dormitories,
the rest of us were sampling the autocross.
Since we were in the class that included all C5s, it was a large class
and very competitive. However, the real
showdown was in Modified class between Hyalite Corvette Club members Matt
Schaeffer, with his Z06, and Gordy Gollehon, in his dedicated C4 racer. Gordy nipped Matt in the kiester, taking the
upset win by a second and a half and ending Matt’s six-year run.
Rumor had it that
Matt immediately went off to place an order for a 2006 Z06 like the one that GM
Corvette Engineer Josh Holder brought to the show for us to drool over. Josh wasn’t bashful about showing off the 505
horsepower of the pre-production car, leaving long strips of black rubber on
the pavement from the 12-inch rear tires.
You had to see it, as they say, to believe it.
During the caravan
to and from the show, “Mr. Twisty” Madson treated us to some great roads for
exercising our seat bolsters. And, while
Doug Evancic showed that he was no novice to this particular form of entertainment,
Bev Evancic put a veritable death grip on the chicken bar.
In mid-June, five of
our cars headed for Border Run at the Club 93 in Jackpot. Although we were plagued by rain, it didn’t
dampen the fun. They’re a pretty
laid-back group that just enjoys getting together. About 60 cars were in attendance. All of our members who wiped down their cars
to compete in the show-and-shine won a trophy.
In what turned out to be one of the most amazing moments of the show,
Dick and Trish Bargman won the second place trophy for their 1965
roadster. So, you’re asking, what is so
amazing about that? Well, for starters,
they drove their 1999 roadster to the show.
The ’65 won the trophy setting at home in the garage! Does anyone think they can top that? Finally, we also brought home the club
participation trophy.
Be sure to get out
and enjoy some of the upcoming events.
Trish and Debbie are putting together some great short trips and day
drives. Also, Jack Larsen’s trip to
Glacier and Waterton is just around the corner.
If you don’t find the time to do some of this, it’ll soon be time to put
your car up for the winter and you’ll be wondering why you have a
Corvette. Enjoy it while it’s here!

Members Rides
by Ben Sanchez
This is an attempt to familiarize Corvettes of Southeast Idaho members with each other and maybe let you know a little something about them that you didn’t before. Even though the membership of the club has been relatively stable there has been some fluid movement. This month’s issue will feature Fred and Wanda Hughes, and Dave and Lee Robertson.
Dave and Lee Robertson are relatively new to the Corvette hobby. After purchasing a dark red 1992 Coupe (their first) last fall, they joined the club this past May and consider themselves “new kids on the block” to the club and its activities.
They claim there is nothing special about their car other than it is – a completely stock, well cared for, 13-year-old car. From my view, a completely stock, well cared for, 13-year-old Corvette is pretty special. But, Corvette isn’t their only interest, they also share a passion for motorcycles and horses. They are also members of the Gold Wing Road Rider’s Association and the American Motorcycle Association.
So, the next time you see a well cared for ’Dark Red ‘92 Vette in attendance at one of the events or an impromptu get together, go over and check out their car and make them feel welcome to the Corvette camaraderie. I hope I get the opportunity when we’re there in July.
Fred and Wanda Hughes have been members since June 1993. Fred’s a guy that must’ve taken after me. His first interest was sparked with the TV show “Route 66”. Yep, that’s when Buzz and Todd were running around the country in a “cool” solid axle Corvette (actually, there were several of them) helping people out of various contrived predicaments. Fred’s best friend had the good fortune to own a new ’63 Vette in high school. Fred says that after he was given the great honor of driving the car he was hooked. Boy, do I understand that.
Fred and Wanda are currently driving a ’96 Grand Sport convertible and a Commemorative ’04 Z06. What a pair of blue beauties! They have gone through six cars along the way and claim they wish they had all of them. Don’t we all. They started the hobby with a big-block ’73 and have also owned a ’78, a ’92, and a ’98 convertible.
Fred has been a past vice president of the club and both he and Wanda have been active members since joining. They also share interests in boating, motorcycling (Harley’s), snow machines, and camping. I think if it goes fast, Fred likes it, and Wanda doesn’t seem to have any trouble keeping up.
They have participated in numerous shows and events over the
years, but the one that really sticks out in their mind is when they headed to
When you meet Fred and Wanda, and you will recognize them by
their machines, make it a point to talk to them. They are friendly, even though Fred, in
particular, is very quiet. I’ve always
said, “pay attention to Fred, he’s pretty quiet, but when he has something to
say, it’s important.” Oh, yeah, you
might ask him how long it takes to get from

Wanted! Member Information
by
Ben Sanchez
The Club Membership Questionnaire included in this
newsletter is an attempt to gather a little information on club members, both
old and new, and share it so each of us will know something about other
members.
From the beginning, “Corvettes of Southeast Idaho”
has been a family-oriented group sharing a common interest in their cars. The events were and continue to be designed
to help bring people together to enjoy each other as well as the cars.
The information you share will be included in the
monthly newsletter as a noteworthy article and it is our intent to include
information on long-time members and the newest members together. Hopefully, we will be able to get to know
each other a little better and perhaps share other common interests too.
If you have access to a digital camera please
include a picture of you with your car for inclusion with the article. You know the old adage “a picture of worth a
thousand words”. Also, if you can think
of anything the
questionnaire
doesn’t cover, please include it.
Claudia and I have not been active in the club for
some time. When we look at the
membership roster, we often wonder who are these new people. We try to keep up with events, but consider
ourselves fortunate to be able to attend one event/meeting a year. Last year it was following the Lewis &
Clark Trail from
This will only work with your participation. So, please take the time to complete the
questionnaire and include a picture of you with your car so we can incorporate
it.
Mail your information to Ben Sanchez,
Thanks,
Ben

Did You
Know
By Egon
It’s a nice day so you decide to
take a little ride. You stop by the filling station for fuel and away you go.
About 20 miles down the road you
spot a traffic cop checking speeds. You glance down at the speedometer just to
be sure you are not speeding, this time. When you do, you see the “check engine
“light is on. Oh no, not on my car you think.
If your car is a late model Vet
or your family car this could happen, and let me explain why.
Remember when you got fuel? ,
maybe, just maybe you did not tighten the gas cap on tight. The computer in you
car monitors the pressure in the fuel tank, making sure that gas vapors are not
getting out of the tank.
So stop at the next rest area
down the road and check it. If the cap isn’t tight, tighten it (some click when
properly tightened). If that was the cause of the “check engine” light coming
on, it should turn off in a short time.
If it doesn’t, you may have to
have a mechanic check the computer system to find out the reason for the “check
engine” light.
