Minutes of the May and June 2002 Meetings
by Ron Bone
May Meeting
Well, the May
meeting minutes did not make the deadline for the May newsletter. But some important things were discussed so
it’s appropriate that we publish them, even if they are late.
The meeting was held
on May 23, 2002 at the Trails Inn restaurant in Ashton. Thirteen members in seven cars
attended. New members Bill and Pam
Smith of Island Park attended their first meeting and were welcomed.
President Randy
Wagner called the meeting to order at 7:55 P.M. He said that there are now three more elementary
schools in the DARE
program. These new schools have asked
if our club would support the program as we did last year, when 22 members gave
graduates a ride to breakfast and to school in their Corvettes. It was a spectacular success. Two schools will graduate DARE students this
Fall, and two will graduate next Spring.
Randy asked the membership to support these events.
Show committee chair
Linda Moore brought to the floor a suggestion for generating next year’s show
logo. She suggested having a contest
for art department students to create a graphics-quality logo for our show. Linda discussed the idea with Bonneville
High School officials, who were very receptive. An appropriate prize for the winning logo would be offered, a $50
or $100 savings bond, for instance (the cost to the club would be half of these
amounts). T-shirts would also be
awarded to all entrants. The contest
could be held for the art departments of other schools in future years. Linda suggested that the club consider the
idea and vote on it at a future meeting.
Linda also presented
the status of preparations for Wild West Vette Fest 2002. Registrations are beginning to come in. Plans are to have dinner at the railroad
station, followed by a dance at the Gray Wolf Inn parking lot afterward. Folks can get their cars ready for the show
the next day, or party, as they wish.
Activities will move into the basement of the hotel if it rains.
Randy suggested that
the club consider participating in a Halloween spook alley at the old Ernst
building this Fall. This idea will be
discussed at a future club meeting.
The meeting was
adjourned at 8:30 P.M.
June Meeting
It could not have
been a nicer evening as eight Corvettes arrived at Winger’s Diner on June 27,
2002. The promise of a cruise
afterward, however, enticed fourteen members inside for our monthly club
meeting.
Vice President Bill
Waters called the meeting to order at 8:00 P.M. Noting the turnout for the meeting, Bill voiced a concern that
the club may lose some of its sponsors if attendance doesn’t improve. All members are asked to attend as many
meetings as possible, so that our sponsors will be inclined to continue their
support. Trish Bargman also suggested
that some club get-togethers might be arranged just to have dinner at our
sponsor’s restaurants.
The next monthly
meeting was set for July 10, 2002, 7:00 P.M., at The Relay Station in St.
Anthony. Yes, that is on a Wednesday
evening! A meeting for those on the
show committee will also be held on July 8, 2002, 7:30 P.M., at Freeman
Park. Finally, our customary first Thursday
get-together at the Idaho Falls Sonic Drive-In was cancelled so that it would not
interfere with July 4th celebrations.
Trish Bargman
discussed a day drive to Virginia City, Montana on July 30, 2002. She is also planning a day drive on July 20,
2002; details will be announced. Anyone
having a suggestion for a destination was asked to contact Trish.
During the course of
the meeting, waitresses began to seat other customers near the tables where
club members were seated. It was really
amusing to see the amazed looks on their faces when Trish stood and delivered a
short dissertation on a Z06. Since she
never bothered to clarify that she was talking about a Corvette, it was clear
that they didn’t have a clue what she was talking about.
Bill Waters
adjourned the meeting at 8:20 P.M. for the promised cruise.
Grand
Coulee Trip
By Trish Bargman
Twelve cars set out on Friday morning for our goal of Grand Coulee Dam. The weather was a little cool. Brian and Patrick didn’t have their tops down! We thought it might get warmer as the day progressed, so the shorts that some were wearing would be fine, right? Yes it did warm up some and all the tops went down. We got to McCall and had a good dinner, went to bed, and got up to SNOW!!
As we wound our way through McCall and on to Riggins it snowed some more. It was really quite pretty, but some people were a little worried as they were trying to get that last bit of wear out of a set of tires that had seen better days. (Won’t do that again, huh Ron?) After we were out of McCall a ways the weather got better. The shorts were working again and soon the tops were down once more.
On we went to Riggins and berry cobbler. The sky was trying to clear. Let’s stop on the top of White Bird Pass -- or maybe not. It rained and snowed. (Hang in there Ron!) Look at the bright side, we need the moisture. You can tell that it has been a dry year. Couldn’t it have waited one more day though?

Who
was there the longest?
New country for everyone I think. I am not sure exactly where we are most of the time. Before we left we cleaned out the car, packed the car, and left the maps out of the car. Later that proved to be a bad idea. We stopped and met Farrell’s brother and watched the fish ladder at the dam before Grand Coulee. It rained most of the day off and on, but when we got to Grand Coulee it stopped so we could sit out and enjoy the laser show on the dam. Our hotel was right across the street and we walked over to the dam for the show.
If
we go this way we’ll miss the snow!
(Yeah,
right!)
The next morning there was no snow! We did have trouble with one person that just couldn’t seem to get out of bed however. It wasn’t all my, I mean her fault. No one told her they were going to stay on Idaho time. Dinner, the laser show, all that was Washington time, so you would think wakeup time would be Washington time too?
Is this what Posi-traction is for?
More pretty and new country. We visited Leavenworth, a quaint town that made us think we were in the Alps of Europe. We bought cherries and were having a pretty nice time. Tops were even down for a while, and then it happened!
It took Farrell three and a half days but he finally lost half of us. We got separated and out of radio range, so we stopped and looked at the map. What map? Wayne and Pam do you have a map? No we left it at home. Jack and Susan do you have a map? No we took it out of the car. We have already established that ours is still in the garage
Sorry!
I thought it was June 8.
at home. I’ll call Fred and Wanda on the
cell phone and find out where the rest of the group is. I hear a voice say “we’re lost too”! They were in our group, but in the front so I hadn’t seen them. Maybe Rich and Linda have a map; no they don’t. Let’s ask Egon. Yes, he has a map. Now all we have to do is figure out where we are, then we will know where we are going! Too bad Farrell, we found you.
The weather could have been better, but the scenery and the traveling companions were the best and that’s all that counts. Thank you Farrell and Darlene. We appreciate all the time and effort you put into these trips.
