Hail from the Chief

By Lynn McKinlay and combined Meeting Minutes by Betty McKinlay

Vice President Wayne Valentine took care of the November meeting at Johnny Carinos.

The December meeting and Christmas Party will also be at Johnny Carinos on the 5th at 7:00 p.m. Everyone is to bring a gift to exchange. Please limit your gift to $10.00. Wayne (356-5204) will need to know your intent so he can make the final arrangements by November 25th.

There are three choices for meals, all at about $12, and I understand a desert is included.

Trish volunteered to head up the shopping committee for Christmas. She would like some volunteers to help (458-4671). The shopping date is December 9, 2001.

Linda Moore (357-7573) would like some help on the Show Committee. Many hands make for a light load.

The long cruise was reviewed. Those who went had a most enjoyable time.

Next years long cruse is being planned, I think by Trash and Linda, to California in July or October during Harvest Vacation.

Brian Novak (522-3076) will be our nominating committee. If you have aspirations to fill an elected position just give Brian a call.

My mind has already turned from driving to skiing. I have five scheduled ski clinics to conduct in the month of December.

That is all from the Bald Eagle at this time.

Did You Know

This month I thought I would address "Computer Cars" that we all own in one brand or another.

First let's go back before the "computer car era" and look at the good old days. It isn't that far back. Take first my 1930 Model A Ford. No computer there, unless you are driving along with a laptop. Adjust points and plugs yearly. Replace plugs every 10,000 miles. Gas mileage is about 18-20 MPG. Overhaul engine at 30,000 miles.

Next I owned a 1947 Studebaker with 3 speeds and an overdrive. In '47 it was the champ in MPG at about 25, cursing at 60 MPH. Overhaul was needed at 30,000 miles.

Next I owned a neat new 1961 VW Bug (still have that one). MPG was now up to the 28-30. I got 50,000 miles out of that car before it needed an overhaul.

Now think back when you had a choke to pull out when starting a cold engine. The car would buck and protest for the first five miles, and if you went on vacation to the coast -- ping, ping. I had to retard the timing while there.

Ok, now let's fast forward to 2000. Ah, the "computer cars". Engines with a little care will last 150,000 miles. Tune-ups are needed only every 75,000 miles. Sparkplugs need changing, on some makes, only every 100,000 miles. If you go to the coast, the computer takes care of the ping, ping. Jump in the car on a cold morning, start the engine, and zoom off to work without a stumble. Gas mileage? Even the "big boats" (Caddie, Lincoln, Chryslers) ring up 28+ MPG, with the Hondas in the mid to high 30s.

So see "computer cars" are not so bad after all. And the junk coming out the exhaust pipe is something like 700% better than my old Ford.

So just enjoy your "computer car". You have no choice; all new cars have computers.

Merry Christmas

And

Happy Holidays

It's hard to believe another year has gone by, but the older we get the more they seem to sneak up on us with reckless abandon.

We along with our friends Steve and Joyce Richason, thoroughly enjoyed this years Wild West Vette Fest. And, we all look forward to next years show. During the weekend, as I watched the events unfold, it reminded me of the first few shows the club sponsored. I can guarantee those events did not go as smoothly. The club has come a long way in the ensuing years and it's easy to tell that a lot of lessons have been learned along the way.

The past few months have found our country in a situation that we never thought we would face. I know we will survive and become stronger because of these tragic events. The survival will come from people like us, the everyday American going about their business. The politicians and world leaders will, of course, play their hand, but without us backing that hand there would be no success. The club has, for years, given to charity to make the world a little better for a few less fortunate and will continue to do so into the future long after this crisis passes. We're doing our part, but we all know we can do more.

Claudia and I wish peace, health, and happiness to all of you during this season and into the next year. May you prosper and share that prosperity with others. We wish we could be with you to celebrate the Christmas season.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Ben and Claudia Sanchez

Club Shoppers,

Be Ready

This year we will meet on December 2 at Fred Meyers. Please be at the entrance by the Jewelry Department by 9:00 am.

We will divide into groups and shop, shop, shop. I hope Fred Meyers is up for us. We have been known to completely take over a store, in a good way of course. We have eight families to provide Christmas for this year. The families are from Idaho Falls, Rexburg, St Anthony and Driggs.

This is a big undertaking, so we could use all the help we can get. When we are done shopping we will go to Bev and Brian's and wrap EVERYTHING. The Club will buy us lunch. All this fun takes several hours, so please count on that. Of course we will take any help you can give us for as long as you can stay.

One thing that can make our communicating in the store easier would be for all those of you who have radios please bring them.

Please come if you can, it is a very rewarding experience. If you have any questions please give me a call. 458-4671. See you at Freddy's!

Trish

Subject: Lingen Felter Corvette

Hi, My name is Mike Bristow. I am e-mailing you from VA in hopes of obtaining information about the Lingen Felter Corvette.

I have what is supposed to be one in my shop and the owner is interested in selling it. I won't lie to you, I have never even heard of one before he came in. I noticed a listing in your web site but am unable to get to that page. Could you please send me some info and possibly a picture. I guess the most important thing is how to identify if it is the real thing. Please send any responses to the below e-mail address.

Thank you for your time and I hope to here from you soon.

                       Thanks,

                           Mike Bristow
