Hail from the Chief

by Brian Novak

SPRING IS HERE!!! I'm shouting because it is snowing outside as I write this. Oh, well, the few nice days we've had recently has got the old blood pumping for warm, sunny days. I even had the top down a few times before this snow thing started again.

As you can see by the calendar of events at the end of the newsletter, it is shaping up to be a very fun Corvette Summer. We have day trips planned, several big shows that we can go to, the National Corvette Museum Caravan and 5th Anniversary event, our car show, the monthly summer get-togethers. If you have any ideas or desires for day/weekend trips, let Egon know and we'll work something out. He's doing a great job of coming up with fun things to do. Up next is the Easter Idaho Technical College Seminar on C-4 Computer Controlled Equipment followed by the trip to Ogden and Hill Air Force Base and Union Station Museums. Mark your calendars, these should be fun.

With so many new members coming into the group, someone suggested getting name-tags for everybody. I am currently looking around for someone to make them up for us, but if you know of anybody that makes them, let me know. I think the name-tag should have the club logo and the persons name on a pin-back tag. Give me ideas however, if you've seen something different that would work for us.

March's meeting had a very good turn-out including several new and potentially new members. Come on out to April's meeting (Dairy Queen on Broadway in Idaho Falls on April 15th, 6:30-7:00 p.m) to meet them and give them a friendly welcome to our club. (For those who will give me a smart-aleck comment... we have place, location, town, date, and time for next months meeting.)

If anyone is interested, this month's Corvette Quarterly had a great article on the new C12 Calloway Corvette. I think somebody should buy me one, it's only about $178,000. Come on, pleeeease.

Finally, I wanted to thank the club for the presidents club coat. I went with a swede coat, denim blue body to match the regular club coat, and saddle tan sleeves. Speaking of coats, a friend of mine is going to digitize the club logo into their embroidery machine for FREE, and says they can beat Classy Threads in cost and quality. I'll let you know when they are set up for production, so if you're ready to buy a coat, you may want to wait for a little while. That's it for now, Vette on dudes!!

Don't forget the Dairy Queen!!!

This year we will try our luck with the Broadway Dairy Queen for our monthly summer get-together. We will begin on April 15th and then go to the first Thursday of the month for a while, then, as summer rolls in, we'll do the first and third Thursdays. Meet around 6:30 - 7:00 pm and we'll hang around for a while and do a nice cruise to appease the Spring Gods.

April's Meeting

Since not much is yet going on, we'll combine the April meeting with the Dairy Queen get-together. Thursday April 15th, around 6:30 - 7:00 p.m at the Dairy Queen on Broadway in Idaho Falls.

And Away We Go!!

by Egon Lamprecht

First, judging from our last meeting most members wanted a change for our Thursday get together.

Ok, I have talked to the owner of the Dairy Queen on west Broadway for our event.

He will have a special for our members on this night. He just would like some identification that we are vetters, this can be a coat, shirt or just a membership card.

He would like to show off the cars by parking them in his lot facing Broadway. He will have nice outside tables and plenty of nice inside tables just in case of bad weather.

The first event will be the Third Thursday of April (April 15). Let's plan on meeting at 6:30 to 7:00 pm. During the summer we will do the twice a month thing just like last year. Let's give it a try and see how it works this summer, it's a nice clean place.

Next, May 1 is the date for the trip to Ogden, Utah to the Hill Air Force Museum and train station tour. Plans are to meet at the country kitchen on west Broadway for breakfast at 8 am.

They have some really good meals and a reasonable price. We will then drive to Hill, spend what time we need and then go to the Union Pacific Depot for more looking. Someplace along the way we will have lunch (club members like to eat you know).

Air Force Museum

The price is right, free admission, we tax payers paid for this you know. 60+ aircraft on display, so if you spend one minute at each 1 hour is gone. I can't do it in one hour and I have been there several times. We will spend the time necessary to enjoy the museum.

Union Station

Boy talk about stuff to see at this place. Just spending some time looking at the building is very interesting. The car museum will blow your minds with the mega buck cars on display.

Almost all of these are the "BIG" classic cars of the 20s and 30s. They are restored to perfection.

The Browning Firearms Museum will be of interest to you if you are into guns. Automatic Rifles and machine guns are just a few. You like "choooo choooo" trains? How about the largest diesel locomotive, or "Big Blow" a gas turbine rated at over twice the horsepower of a typical modern locomotive. Had enough to want to attend this tour ? Well we haven't mentioned the models of railroad history, the construction of the transcontinental rail lines.

I have talked to the folks operating the museum, they will be glad to see us. They will give us a special parking place in front of the museum.

Sorry this is not a free-bee, $3.00 per person, unless you are Marvin or Egon, then its $2.00.

At the station is nice restaurant, the Union Grill, where we can have a meal before returning to Idaho Falls.

This trip will put about 400 miles on our cars, considerable distance but I think you will enjoy it.

Oh yes, don't forget the CB radios, I want you to find me when "Connie" gets lost.

March Meeting Minutes:

by Janet Miller

The March meeting was held at Gringo's in Rexburg. There was a great turnout and some new members came too. Egon told us about some upcoming events. A trip to Ogden, Ut to see the aircraft museum and the train station is in the works and also a trip tp Eastern Idaho Tech. College to hook a Corvette up to the computer.

The Dairy Queen on Broadway in Idaho Falls is going to have food specials just for Corvette owners. It sounds like fun. We all had a great meal, visited then looked at the cars in the parking lot.

Wild West Vette Fest 1999

Plans are still going well for the car show. We still need volunteers to help out with some of the events. Please contact Kelly or Terry Armstrong or Brian or Bev Novak for questions or to volunteer.
