Brief History of Flintknapping

Grayhawk logo SMALL.jpg (4164 bytes)

Science speculates that the story of flintknapping may go back as far as two and one-half million years. While techniques may have evolved over the ages the basic principle is that of removing flakes of stone to form a tool, weapon, effigy, jewelry, or other items. It is a craft that spawned masters who were superb in their abilities to create useful and often very artistic pieces. This medium is practiced by relatively few artisans in the world today.
